There are many tools for generating talking head videos with AI. However, singing is a different domain from talking. Many tools produce good talking videos but bad singing videos.

In this article we will specifically compare AI avatar tools on the quality of their singing videos. If you want to make an AI music video, this article is for you.

Methods

We compared 6 popular AI talking head tools on various avatar types (photorealistic, cartoons, non-humanoids, etc) and various types of music (singing,  rapping, acappella, etc).

LemonSlice - an AI video model specific for generating expressive, talking avatars. It allows you to generate talking or singing AI avatars from just a single image.

Runway - a general-purpose AI video model that also has a lip syncing tool. Runway's lip sync tool allows you to go directly from an image to a lip synced video.

Kling - a general-purpose AI video model that also has a lip syncing tool. Using Kling for singing requires first generating a video and then lip syncing on top of it.

HeyGen - an AI video generator platform focused on talking heads for B2B applications, such as sales videos, corporate training, influencer ads, and more. HeyGen's photo avatars (not their influencer library) were used for this comparison.

Hedra - a content creation platform that allows users to generate images, audio, and videos from many different companies in one place. Their Character-3 model creates AI avatars from a single photo.

D-ID - an AI video generation platform focused on AI avatars. D-ID was one of the pioneers in speaking portrait technology.

Note: All of these tools allow full customizability of the avatars. You can generate an avatar from a single photo. This is in contrast to other tools, like Synthesia and Captions, that only work with a preset library for photorealistic characters.

Results

Conclusions

Lemon Slice is the best tool for generating singing AI avatars. It has superior lip sync and expressiveness compared to other tools. Lemon Slice works well across a variety of musical styles - from rap to pop music - and avatar styles - from photorealistic to cartoons.

The second best tool for singing is Kling. It doesn't work for all avatar types - most cartoons and non-humanoids cannot be lip-synced. And the lip sync quality of Kling is worse than Lemon Slice overall. However, Kling able to animate arms and background motion, which can be a big plus depending on the shot.
